ELEVEN

Olivia climbed into the passenger side of Zach’s blue Silverado pickup. The cab was cluttered like always. He hadn’t changed much in that regard. But familiar smells filled the inside and wrapped around her, sending memories crashing down on her again. Memories that were almost too much to bear, especially when he got into the truck on the driver’s side and peered at her with his icy blue eyes.

Déjà vu.

An easy smile started on his lips but quickly morphed into a thin line. “You should know that I’d prefer leaving you here in Gideon with your friends where I can trust you’ll be safe. Taking you with me to find and help Rich isn’t my idea of a great plan.”

He stared as though still waiting on her to change her mind.

“Considering the guy found us here, I’m not all that safe if I stay, and I don’t want to bring more harm to this town or my friends.”

Frown deepening, he started the ignition. The truck rumbled to life. Olivia stared out the window at Gideon, wishing the scenery could chase away the images of her riding with Zach in his truck when they were just teens. But nothing could stop the memories and familiar feelings of first love that made her heart dance in anticipation.

Her breaths were unsteady, and she hoped Zach hadn’t noticed. Somehow she had to push it out of her mind. She glanced at him, watching him navigate the plowed road through town, steady and self-assured. Somehow she had to let him go completely. How was it possible that she had never truly done that?

Once the truck warmed up, Zach switched on the heat, letting it blast through the cab.

“I don’t know about you, but I didn’t get much rest last night. Why don’t you sleep on the drive?” Zach maneuvered out of Gideon and onto the one road out of town. “We don’t know what we’re going to find once we get to Diamond Lake. We have a long day ahead of us.”

“I’m not sure I can rest until we get off this road. The drive is treacherous even without snow and ice.” Though with warm air that wrapped around her like a comfy blanket filling the cab, she might struggle to stay awake.

“You’ll just have to trust me.” He glanced her way then back to the road. “Do you trust me?”

“Sure. You know what you’re doing.”

But had there been more to the question? Olivia sensed there was, but maybe it was her own traitorous imagination. She was glad he was forced to concentrate on the road because she couldn’t hold his gaze. Instead, she watched out the window, admiring the beautiful snow-covered forests of the Wild Rogue Wilderness.

Sure, she trusted him. But Olivia couldn’t trust herself. She couldn’t trust her own heart to be with this man on this dangerous mission without growing soft on him again. It seemed impossible that she was in this situation. Forced to be in proximity to a man she’d loved so completely, but apparently not enough to let him pursue his dream.
